I watched the WWDC Keynote speech from Apple the whole way through this year. No fast-forwarding past the financial report. No skipping over the duller features in the Leopard preview and I was honestly disappointed. While there were lots of lovely new tools to be shown off, and I shall certainly be purchasing a copy of the new Mac OS when it's released, I was put off by the cheap digs that were made at MS from start to finish.
I'll be the first to admit that I can see the likeness between Vista's operating system theme and the shiny Aqua theme we see in Apple's OS X. Even down to the new Vista logo - wrapped in an aqua bubble. To say that Microsoft is copying everything start to finish, however, is arrogant to say the least on Apple's part.
During the Leopard preview we were introduced to 'Spaces'. Like everything Apple is has a wonderful GUI and implementation which make the program powerful and intuitive. The idea - remember apple never copy they 'innovate' - is just like virtual desktops or workspaces for anyone who has ever used Linux or Solaris.
Spotlight, a great tool for instantly seraching the entire computer, like google, has been done before also...by google to name just one.
Time Machine, a program designed to automatically backup all your data and allow you to 'fly back in time' to a particular date or until you see the version you wish to restore. Once again, it has a wonderful implementation in OS 10.5 but backups are nothing new. In fact, while no backup software has been included since OS X first began - there were backup capabilities in OS 9 - Microsoft has included system restore to allow automatic backups and failover restores, especially useful when toying with drivers.
I am now a Mac convert. I have had a Mini for a year now and a MacBook for a week and I love to work with OS X. It is a superior platform and I'll be glad to see Apple pick up great ideas and create their own to increase the value of the operating system. However, I wish Apple would stop the pathetic digs at others, it's not cool.
