Alexi Murdoch at the Fox Theatre, Boulder

21st February 2007

Based on a single song I had heard and the fact that tickets were only $12, my flatmate and I headed into Boulder to see Alexi Murdoch at the Fox Theatre. His album arrived the day before, so we stuck it on as we drove to the venue to get into the mood.

Supporting Alexi were the 'Midnight Movies' who also play on some of Alexi's tracks to provide drums and other backing. While they weren't bad, you couldn't help but feel that they were somehow missing the mark. Tunes that started out great were marred by uninspired vocals often stretching the song several minutes past its lifespan. This wasn't to say the lead vocalist was untalented. In fact she had a great voice, but it just wasn't working with the band.

After what was practically an hours worth of support, Alexi took to the stage and instantly the tired Midnight Movies were a thing of the past. His music is often quiet and understated but the audience was quiet too transfixed on the stage. The banter was also good, something that can all too often ruin all credibility of an artists live performace. When two slightly over excited people at the front started dancing and drumming on the stage Murdoch finished the song with a giggle and commented on how he wasn't expeciting such an "interactive experience".

Given that most of the concerts I have ever been to have been loud and upbeat it was refreshing to see someone perform mellow songs on stage. When Midnight Movies came back on stage to perform the backing drums, vocals and guitar everything slid into place and Alexi's songs were given a more decorated fuller sound. Of particular note were All My Days, a mellow favourite, and Song For You. Check out the album Time Without Consequence and see what you think.
